A meeting was held with the entire freshmen class regarding the recent racist events that have taken place on campus. This meeting established an understanding and acknowledgement of the recent events that occurred.

Racial slurs and hate crimes were discovered throughout campus but primarily in the Smith Hall dorm. Some students were subjected to racist comments about their appearance.

The meeting was held with faculty, students, and staff members speaking their minds.  Dr. Heather Mitchell-Buck, who heads the first-year programs and organized the meeting said, “The meeting itself was excellent, it was not what I expected to happen.”

Multiple first-year students got up and spoke their truths and opinions about the topic of events.

“That behavior has no place on a college campus, it has no place in Frederick, it has no place anywhere within my range of understanding,” Mitchell-Buck said.

Julia Aldred, a freshman QSU representative, went on stage and expressed her opinion. In an interview following the meeting, Aldred said,

“I just wanted to convey how angry I was just because I pointed that I’m an empathetic person, but I just don’t understand why people would do that.”

During the meeting, many students went onto stage in the auditorium and spoke their mind and experiences about bullying and anti-discrimination.

After the meeting, multiple freshmen had to comprehend what occurred and listened to the overall message. Many freshmen said they walked out of the meeting with a better understanding of recent events, racism, equality, and anti-discrimination.
