In the wake of Edgar Schick’s provost contract ending, President Chapdelaine named Amy Gottfried the acting associate provost of Hood College.

The announcement was made last Friday through an email from the president. Dr. Gottfried will be handling student academic issues and attending events on the president’s behalf until the search for a permanent provost ends.

Gottfried is a professor of English at Hood and the director of the Masters in Humanities Program. She is also on the college’s Academic Standards and Policy Committee.

She said that, although she worked with Chapdelaine on the provost search, she did not know why she was selected to be acting associate provost. Her experience on the committee may have been an influence on the president selecting her.

“I am already familiar with student-related academic matters that the provost deals with, as well as with students who are experiencing academic difficulties of various kinds,” she said.

According to Gottfried, many members of Hood’s faculty are volunteering to assist Chapdelaine while she narrows down the search for a new provost. Between Feb. and June, those volunteers will be wearing unique “provost” hats.

In her email announcing Gottfried’s new position, Chapdelaine referenced the efforts by Hood’s faculty to help with the provost selection process.

“I am deeply appreciative of all the support,” she said.

Gottfried said she will not be on the search committee for the new provost. However, she said she would attend as many of the campus visits by the candidates as possible.

For students at Hood confused by the unexpected changes in the past month, Gottfried asked for students to remain confident in the college’s leadership.

“Please remember that you have a dedicated faculty and staff who will do whatever we need to do in order to keep things running smoothly, including bringing our new provost to campus as soon as possible!” she said.
