Bookstore takes students’ designs

Hood College Bookstore is offering the chance for students to submit clothing designs that they would like to see offered in the Hood College Bookstore.

The bookstore, managed by Hailey Sarno, has been accepting student submissions for possible clothing options when students showed interest in playing a role in the design process for the clothing that is sold in the bookstore.

“Nobody knows what the students want more than the students themselves,” Hailey Sarno said.

The bookstore management hopes it can create more community between the bookstore and the Hood community as sometimes a divide is felt since the bookstore is run through Barnes and Noble, according to bookstore management.

Information began to spread word-of-mouth when some suggestions had been made and other interested students began to hear about it as well.

Students interested in submitting ideas should contact the bookstore if they have any questions. Bookstore management will help interested students with the specific requirements for incorporating different Hood College logos that cannot be altered, such as the Hood shield logo and Blazer mascot if they are going to be used. When the book store picks a student submission the student will attend the art approval process with management and the vendor for changes to the design if they need to be made. Students submitting designs should have an open idea of what type of material or specific shirt they may want as the bookstore is limited to what they are able to order, according to bookstore management.

Because of the approval process students need to submit designs at least one year in advance of their graduation if they would like to buy the clothing before they graduate. If they are a junior at the time of submission it may take until their senior year for the design to become available through the bookstore according to bookstore management.

Students can also watch the Hood Bookstore Facebook and Instagram, @hoodbookstore for new clothing options and to see if any student’s submissions are currently up on the sites. Students may also have the chance to vote on the student submissions through social media, according the bookstore management.

For clothing options students need to think of opposite seasons for their submission ideas. If it is the summer students should be thinking of winter seasonal clothing and during the winter months be thinking of summer seasonal clothing because of the ordering schedule.

Elizabeth Panalone, sophomore music major, had positive things to say about the idea of the Hood College Bookstore accepting submissions. “I would love for there to be submissions taken, I could come up with so many ideas of what I would want to wear on a school shirt,” Panalone said.

Student’s submissions will be accepted throughout the semesters with no official start or end date, according to bookstore management.

Students interested in submitting ideas for clothing should contact Hailey Sarno, store manager, or Clark Martz, assistant store manager. Designs may be submitted through the bookstore website, the bookstore email, or in person.
