The Least Squares Math Club and Free Radicals Chemistry Club will be hosting the Hodson Olympics on Sunday, April 22 in Hodson Science and Technology Center. Jes Garshell, senior and president of Hood’s math club, proposed the idea with Matt Shorey, senior and president of the chemistry club.
“Basically, this event stemmed out of the competition between the departments in Hodson. I wanted to have an outlet for that and find out once and for all which department is best,” Garshell said.
The Hodson Olympics will be a two part competition, however, the club presidents were thinking of having a third round which would consist of finding things around Hodson.
“We felt that Hodson is a building that we all spend so much time in every day. A few of us even joke about living there, and yet there are some things, even as a senior, I am still shocked to see in that building,” Garshell said.
The first round of the competition will be a jeopardy game, consisting of graduate record examinations words, said Matt Shorey president of Free Radicals Chemistry Club.
Jeopardy questions will also be in relation to the departments involved with the Olympics, as well as a few grab-bag type questions on other topics or Hood College in general, according to Garshell.
The third part of the competition will be a physical round, merging with a charity walk also taking place on April 22.
The competition consists of three teams, math, chemistry and computer science. “We couldn’t find a representative willing to get a team together for Biology, or at least no one has contacted me, but that is a hope for future competitions,” said Garshell. There are no set limits to team size and any student competing can join any team. Teams will be judged and points will be awarded to those who answer jeopardy questions correctly.
“April is also Mathematics Awareness Month, so it was only natural for one of our big events to fall in April. I hope everyone can come out and support their favorite Hodson department!”
