The Senior Honors Society on campus known as Mortar Board recently held a freshman essay contest.
Mortar Board, which aims to promote scholarship, leadership, and service on campus, extended this contest solely to freshmen, in hopes of encouraging scholarship, as well as awareness for the organization.
The contest was proposed by senior Carter Reitman during a meeting. The contest stipulated that the freshmen who participated submit an essay that had previously been written as a class assignment. The essays were then judged for clarity, organization, and depth of thought by Reitman himself and senior Lindsay Cogdill.
“As always, it’s a pleasure to read the work of new students. If Hood continues to invest in scholarship, I have no doubt that coming generations will maintain a tradition of academic excellence,” said Reitman.
The winner of the contest was Mary Hickman, with her essay entitled “A Bridge Between two Burdens.” Tara Biser took second place, followed by Justin Cifuentes in third.
Because Mortar Board is a Senior Honor Society, it will be up to the next class to decide whether or not to continue the tradition of the essay contest.
“I would like for the next group of Mortar Board members to continue this contest. It would help the student body to recognize our steps towards rewarding and celebrating scholarship,” added Mortar Board President Mollie Widdowson.
