In commemoration of World AIDS Day, Hood students and faculty came together in an open mike night event.

Nineteen students performed at the open mike night last Thursday in the Coblentz Seminar Room.  The World AIDS Day event was hosted by the student organizations TEA (Tolerance, Equality, Acceptance), Equal Sex, and BSU (Black Student Union).

“Overall, the event raised $87 through donations.  The money raised will be donated to the Elton John AIDS foundation,” Travis Eichleberger, advisor for TEA, said.

The performers at the event read poems and sang songs.  First year student Jayshanna Ropper MCed the event.

Overall, 90 students attended the event.

World AIDS Day takes place annually on Dec. 1.  The worldwide event gives people the opportunity to come together to show their support in the fight against AIDS and HIV and to support those who are currently living with and who have died from HIV and AIDS.

In the middle of the performances, the organizations who ran the event presented a slideshow presentation that provided information about World AIDS Day and the Elton John AIDS foundation.

Besides the open mike night, TEA and Equal Sex set up educational tables of information in Whitaker and passed out red ribbons throughout the day.

Overall, the event provided the Hood community with an outlet to commemorate World AIDS Day.

“I felt vey proud of the turnout of the event,” said Eichleberger.
