Halloween Party Impresses All

Nov. 1,1984

Halloween came to Hood on Saturday, Oct. 27, with the annual Beaux Art Ball taking place in the dining hall. It was a time for the students to show off the costumes they have been saving up all year. Even though many people leave the decision of what to wear till the last minute, others plan well in advance allowing their creativity to shine through.

This year students, in their transformed state, danced to the sounds of Eros, a band who played everything from Billy Idol to Van Halen.

There cannot be a costume ball without a costume contest. During the band’s first break Mia Pefinis, social committee chair, announced that contest judges Lisa Koogle and Dining Hall manager Jim Griffe would be walking around to judge the wide variety of costumes on hand at the mixer.

After all of the judging was done, Mia Pefinis announced the winners. Kirstin Jackson won for the prettiest costume, dressed as a night club singer from the 1940s. The cutest costume was the bumble bee worn by Mary Alice Gannon. The cutest couple was won by Mr. and Mrs. Peanut, Ginny Jimenez and Beth Bolley, dressed like the ones on the Planter’s peanut jars.  Brian fromFortDetrickwon for the scariest costume in his transformed state of a hockey player. The best look-a-like prize went to Rick also fromFortDetrick, dressed as Indiana Jones. For most obnoxious costume Mia Pefinis won for her version of the Hood Pig showing what too much dining hall food could do. Susan Edmonstons, won most traditional for her imitation of the Keystone Cop.

John Arthur’s flapper costume won for the funniest, while most original went to Janice Peacock and Howard Speigel’s half man half woman costume.  The best group costume went to the Wizard of Oz dining hall workers.

The Beaux Arts ball is one event that highlights the Hood social calendar. It was a night of fun for those who stayed on campus and attended it.

From the Present

For Hood College, Halloween comes early.  The festivities will kick off with various dorm sponsored events, including a Ghost Tour of downtown Frederick on Oct. 21, pumpkin painting in Shriner, and showings of scary movies in Smith.

On Oct. 27, Hood will be overrun with a variety of small creatures as the children of theFrederickcommunity swarm the dorms in costumes that range from adorable to scary.  Safe harvest gives the dorms a chance to channel their spooky side and lets students break out their Halloween costumes early.  For some, it is a practice run for Fright Night, but for others alternative and more child-friendly costumes make an appearance.

Following a tradition that has apparently been around for quite a while, Fright Night hosts a variety of Halloween activities, including a costume contest.  Categories in previous years have included best group costumes, scariest, funniest, and more.

After reading about the Hood Pig costume of ’84, I realized how many Hood-themed costumes would be possible.  Do you love the color pink? Why not dress like the coveted pink spoon from Policies for Dollars? Have a favorite faculty member?  Why not embody them for the night?  You could also dress up like any of the ghosts associated with campus legends.

The most impractical yet ultimately entertaining Hood costume of them all would be to find a large group of students and dress up as the Pergola.  I’m not sure how that would work, but think of the havoc and possible fear left in your wake as people try to not split the poles in a crowded room.

With all of the creative minds at Hood, I’m sure there are many other Hood-themed costumes just waiting to be created, so see all you Hoodlums at Fright Night!
