Some Hood College students may wonder what there is to do after a long week of classes and homework. On Aug. 28, 2026, Jasmin Cherry, Hanna Janke and Krisztina Fabo hosted a Yard Games in the Quad event as resident assistants for their residents and other students and faculty.
The yard games consisted of tug of war, a trust test, cornhole and Spikeball. This took place on the quad, which is in the center of campus, largely known for the beautiful gazebo decorated with overgrown vines and trees that crawl up the sides. There is seating where students can sit outside and feel the breeze to decompress after a hard test or a long day of studying.
Despite the sudden swarm of flies, the weather was beautiful as students began to join in curiosity, some with growling stomachs as they made their way to Coblentz and others on the way to meet their friends for a relaxing Friday evening.
The sound of laughter and cheers was inviting as two teams began to pull on each side of the rope, hoping to win. The girls defeated Mac Ardia and JD Arney. The boys were outnumbered, but what mattered was getting to know one another through friendly competition. Jay L – G and Ella McCabe sought to test their friendship with one blindfolded while the other attempted to talk them through obstacles. The trust was on point as Ella passed with flying colors. It was a true test of friendship.
During the games, Jasmin, who is a sophomore here at Hood College, began to speak of why she became an RA. “Really enjoying it and getting to know my residents,” Jasmin said.
She expressed that being an RA has been helpful when it comes to leaving her comfort zone by being more involved and having to get to know new people.
Taylor Gist, director of Housing and Residence Life, also discussed a new campuswide initiative to promote more student engagement and leadership on campus. This resident assistants’ event is one of the first of many planned this semester to encourage student engagement beyond the classroom.
