Hood College’s track and field and cross country programs are entering a new season with a new coach, bringing a fresh approach to the Blazers as the team prepares for another year of competition.
Evan Freeman was recently named the new head coach of Hood’s track and field and cross country programs. The appointment comes as the team looks to build on previous seasons while developing its athletes both on and off the track.
For Freeman, taking over the program is an opportunity to establish a strong team culture while helping athletes reach their individual goals.
“Cross country and track & field are a unique sport that allow for a plethora of different athletes, from jumpers to distance runners to throwers, to chase their ambition, it is a melting pot of different people, perspectives, abilities and skill set,” Freeman said. “As our program continues to grow, this offers the opportunity for our men and women to be a part of something unique that will teach them life skills, perspective and perseverance that will allow them to thrive after Hood.”
Freeman brings years of coaching experience to Hood. He previously worked with Towson University, Mississippi College and Baldwin Wallace University. His coaching experience spans all three NCAA divisions, which will allow him to work with athletes competing in a variety of events.
One of Freeman’s priorities is developing a training environment that encourages athletes to challenge themselves while supporting their teammates.
“To cultivate an environment that amplifies our student-athletes’ determination to improve and reach their full potential,” Freeman said. “We want to set a standard of excellence in everything that we do as a team, that way, as we continue to grow our program, the expectations are already in place.”
This transition gives returning athletes an opportunity to adjust to a new coaching style and expectations.
As the Blazers begin their season, the new coaching staff will work with athletes to establish goals and prepare for conference competition.
The Blazers will return to competition Sept. 19 at Stevenson University.
