The Hood College women’s ice hockey team opened the 2025–26 season with two hard-fought games at Skate Frederick, falling 2–1 in a shootout on Nov. 7, and then dropping a 5–0 decision on the Nov. 8 rematch.
The team’s opener against Arcadia University was tight from the start. After giving up the first goal, Hood battled back with scores from Renata Petrella, Sofie Ancona and Astrid Wilbur.
Petrella picked up an assist, while goalie Maggie Grijalva finished with 50 saves to keep the Blazers even through regulation and overtime.
Hood took a 3–2 lead midway through the third period when Petrella tipped in a shot from the point, but Arcadia answered late and forced the game into overtime.
Both teams traded chances in the 3-on-3 extra frame, and the Knights eventually edged Hood in the shootout, 2–1.
The Blazers came out looking for a split on Saturday, but Arcadia took control early with two quick goals in the first period and never let up, skating away with a 5–0 win.
Grijalva stopped 24 shots before giving way to Kamryn Sohner, who added 13 saves in relief.
Despite the score, the Blazers’ defense held firm for long stretches, and both goaltenders turned aside quality chances.
