Hood College hosted its annual Majors Fair and Ice Cream Social on Oct. 23 in the Whitaker Campus Center, giving students a chance to explore academic programs and officially declare their majors.

The event, designed primarily for first-year students, also attracted several sophomores interested in learning more about available programs.

Representatives from each department were stationed at tables throughout the venue to discuss their fields, course requirements, and potential career paths.

Students who decided on a major could declare it on the spot at the registrar’s table, located at the front of the venue.

Each declaration was celebrated with the ringing of a bell and the presentation of a T-shirt to the newly declared student.

“I grew up on writing,” said Hood student R.J. Kirkland, who declared a major in communication arts during the event.

The Majors Fair and Ice Cream Social began in 2018 and has since become an annual tradition.

Organizers say it continues to help students connect with faculty, ask questions, and gain confidence in their academic decisions.

According to Maura Page, assistant director of employer relations at the Hood College Career Center, feedback from previous years has been overwhelmingly positive. The only complaint, she said, came when the event was held on a Wednesday, which conflicted with class schedules.

Another Majors Fair is planned for spring 2026, giving students another opportunity to declare their majors and enjoy some ice cream while doing it.
