Four Hood College education faculty members presented their collaborative research at the British Educational Research Association (BERA) Conference, held Sept. 9–11 at the University of Sussex.
The team, Ashley Coen, Christy Graybeal, Rebecca Grove and department chair Kristine Calo, presented their work on effortful thinking, activating prior knowledge and their ongoing partnership with Frederick County Public Schools.
Their 90-minute workshop focused on strategies for building a shared vocabulary in teacher preparation, including classroom approaches centered on effortful thinking and activating prior knowledge.
Calo said attending the conference, “was a very positive experience, I think, for us and our audience. The conference as a whole was very interesting, to hear about educational practices and programs from around the world.”
“We couldn’t have anticipated how much they wanted to talk about things,” Grove said.
Graybeal later added that they, “definitely had to adjust as we went, depending on what people wanted to talk about. We were adjusting the timeline throughout it.”
Beyond the conference sessions, the trip also gave the group a chance to experience British culture and explore popular attractions, such as Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey in London, as well as the countryside in southern England on their way to Brighton, where the conference was held.
The team expressed that they would love to attend the conference again and present if given the chance. Calo said, “The BERA felt warm and collaborative” and emphasized their gratitude for Hood’s support.
