Four Hood faculty members from the education department presented research at the British Education Research Association Conference on Sept. 9-11.
The group included Ashley Coen, Christy Graybeal, Rebecca Grove and department chair Kristine Calo.
They presented work on primary education that they undertook with officials from Frederick County Public Schools.
The Hood faculty members started building their project in the 2023 school year, hosting four workshops focused on effortful thinking. They continued workshops into the 2024 school year, focused on activating prior knowledge.
The goal of these workshops was to ensure that educators instruct future teachers using the same language and similar advice, said Christy Graybeal.
The British conference, held at the University of Sussex, provided faculty with an opportunity to showcase their research, engage with new ideas, and bring back insights that enrich the classroom experience for Hood College students.
“Those are important ideas for future teachers and early career teachers to be thinking about as they’re planning lessons,” said Graybeal, when asked about the impact she hopes this work brings.
Faculty members presented a 90-minute workshop intended to “emphasize the power of a shared vernacular among educators,” Coen said. The biggest takeaway they hope people got from this workshop is the importance of having a close relationship between education programs and the local school system.
This trip was not all work and no play. Coen and Graybeal expressed their excitement to do some sightseeing in their free time.
