With the presidential election just over a month away, Hood College is helping students prepare students for Nov. 5.
The efforts are being led by the Hood Votes Committee, a group of staff and faculty that aims to coordinate voter outreach on campus.
“This [committee] is trying to improve coordination, but Hood Votes is also responding to the ‘All-In’ Democracy Challenge,” said Carin Robinson, an associate professor of political science and co-chair of the committee. “Andrea Chapdelaine signed on, which, in essence, is making a pledge to say our campus is going to attempt to improve voter turnout by creating a voter action plan.”
The HVC action plan includes coordinating engagement events, such as the debate Bingo that was held on Sept.10 and working with organizations such as student unions and the Board of Elections.
The HVC held an informational session for students interested in becoming volunteers to help with voter registration on Sept. 12. The committee also held a voter registration event on Sept. 17 in the Beneficial-Hodson Library.
On Sept. 30, Hood will host a Braver Angels debate discussing free speech policies on college campuses. The week of Oct. 6 is voter education week on campus, where students can access many useful resources to help them with the current and future elections.
How to Register to Vote
If you missed voter registration on campus, don’t worry. The deadline to register to vote online is Oct. 15.
To register, go to your home state’s Board of Elections website. There will be an online form you can fill out, or you can print out the form and take it to the local Board of Elections office.
