Hood College’s Latinx Student Union is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month with a series of events.
On Sept.16, the club held a Spanish-language workshop with sweet bread, or “pan dulce.”
After everyone ate, the workshop began with the club’s executive board introducing themselves and teaching members of the audience how to answer questions in Spanish, such as names, age, and year in school.
After everyone introduced themselves, the club played music by Latin artists and opened the floor for people who needed help with their Spanish homework.
The rest of the event was left for people to mingle and have an enjoyable time.
About 20 people attended.
Wilner Aguilar, the club’s vice president, said everyone is welcome at the club. “We want the Latinx Student Union to feel like a safe place for everyone, disregarding skin color or background. We aim to build a diverse community of students that value customs, morals, and culture into their lives,” she said.
The goal, she said, is to allow Hood students to explore and engage in Latin cultures.
More events this month include:
Sept. 23– A fiesta on the quad outside of Coblentz at 6 p.m., including a Latin band, dancers and tacos.
Sept. 30–A Loteria Night in the Coblentz Seminar room at 7 p.m., playing a game similar to bingo.
