QSU prepares for annual Safe Sex Carnival

By Sofia Montoya-Deck

Hood College’s Queer Student Union (QSU) is hosting its annual Safe Sex Carnival on Friday, Sept. 27 from 8 p.m. to  11 p.m.

The carnival will be held in Whitaker Campus Commons, with games taking over both the first and second floors. According to QSU President Ella Rosenberg, “The Safe Sex Carnival aims to educate students on safe sex practices through fun games.”

Games in past years have included Fishing for Sperm, Dildo Cornhole, Lube Bowling, Condom Pop, and more.

A variety of campus organizations are expected to join in the festivities, each hosting games that participants can play to win tickets. Earned tickets can then be redeemed for safe sex-themed prizes, such as boob pillows, condoms, vibrators and many more.

“I love seeing how excited people get to attend the event,” Rosenberg said. “And seeing people learn about safe sex practices and win prizes.”

Entry to the Safe Sex Carnival is limited to Hood College students. Attendees are recommended to arrive at or near the hour, as wristbands are distributed to corresponding hour-long timeslots (8 p.m. to  9 p.m., 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 11 p.m.). Once their hour is up, attendees can rejoin the entry line to receive a new wristband for the next timeslot.

Designated timeslots are set in place to ensure the event, and its games, don’t become overcrowded. The event typically attracts hundreds of students and hopes to do so again this year.

“I like seeing people have fun,” Rosenberg said. “That’s the best part.” Those who may be uneasy about attending a sex-themed carnival can rest assured that the atmosphere is welcoming and respectful, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy educational activities.

“It’s OK to be unsure,” Rosenberg said. “But I promise it’s really fun. And you get free stuff.”

Carnival attendees are also able to enjoy snacks and light refreshments as they play, including cotton candy, popcorn and lemonade.

Following the Safe Sex Carnival, QSU has many other events planned for the remainder of the semester. On Oct. 2, the club will be collaborating with the Campus Activities Board and Latinx Student Union for a pumpkin painting event. Other events include “Coming Out Day Cupcake Decorating” on Oct. 10, a “Bondfire” on Oct. 24, and their annual Rocky Horror Picture Show viewing on Nov. 1.

QSU typically hosts events on Thursdays at 7 p.m. in Whitaker Campus Room 220. Upcoming events and details can be found on Pergola Connect and on Instagram (HoodCollegeQSU). The club welcomes everyone to their events, regardless of sexual orientation. “There is no requirement to be affiliated with LGBTQ+ or to be queer,” Rosenberg said. “You can just come to have fun. All are welcome.”
